Cost of Living: Fort Lauderdale vs. Port St. Lucie

by Melissa Carbonell

How Does the Cost of Living in Port St. Lucie Compare to Fort Lauderdale?

Port St. Lucie is significantly more affordable than Fort Lauderdale across housing costs, property taxes, homeowners insurance, and daily expenses. A homeowner spending $4,000 to $5,000 per month on housing in Broward County can typically achieve a comparable or better lifestyle in St. Lucie County for $2,500 to $3,500 per month.

I ran these numbers for myself before my husband and I made the move from Fort Lauderdale to Port St. Lucie. Then I watched my clients' jaws drop when I ran them for their situations.

The short version: your money goes dramatically further on the Treasure Coast.

Not a little bit further. Not if you squint at the numbers. Dramatically. Measurably. Life changingly further.

Let me show you the actual comparison because this is what moves people from "I've been thinking about it" to "Let's do it."

Housing Costs: The Big One

This is where the gap is widest and where it matters most because housing is the biggest line item in your budget.

In the Fort Lauderdale area, a three bedroom, two bathroom single family home in a desirable Broward County neighborhood typically runs between $500,000 and $700,000 for a property built in the 1990s or early 2000s. Whether updated or not, you're paying a premium for the South Florida location.

In Port St. Lucie, that same budget can buy a brand new construction home in a gated community with modern finishes, impact windows, a two car garage, and amenities such as a pool, fitness center, and pickleball courts. Or you can spend between $350,000 and $450,000 and keep the difference.

I show every rightsizing client a side by side comparison: what your Fort Lauderdale home is worth versus what that equity can buy in Port St. Lucie. The numbers often speak for themselves.

Property Taxes

Broward County property tax rates are generally higher than those in St. Lucie County.

If you've lived in your Fort Lauderdale home for years, your homestead exemption may be keeping your taxes manageable. However, when you sell and purchase a home in Port St. Lucie, you benefit from a fresh homestead exemption based on a lower purchase price in a lower tax county.

For many relocation clients, property taxes decrease by approximately $2,000 to $5,000 per year after making the move.

Homeowners Insurance

Insurance costs have become one of the biggest concerns for South Florida homeowners. Many Fort Lauderdale homeowners have seen premiums double or even triple in recent years.

Port St. Lucie insurance rates are often lower for several reasons:

  • Newer construction meets current building codes.
  • Much of Port St. Lucie is located farther inland, reducing wind and flood exposure.
  • Claims history in St. Lucie County is generally less severe than in Broward County.

For a new construction home in Port St. Lucie, homeowners insurance typically costs 30% to 50% less than coverage for an older home in the Fort Lauderdale area. On a $400,000 home, that can translate to annual savings of $3,000 to $6,000.

Daily Living Costs

Groceries, gas, dining, and everyday shopping are relatively similar between the two areas. After all, you're still in Florida. You'll still find Publix, Target, and familiar national retailers.

Where many homeowners notice the difference is in service related expenses. Landscapers, plumbers, electricians, and handymen often charge less on the Treasure Coast than they do in South Florida.

The labor market in Port St. Lucie simply hasn't reached the same pricing levels as Broward County.

The Total Monthly Savings

When I run the numbers for clients relocating from Fort Lauderdale to Port St. Lucie, the savings often look like this:

  • Lower mortgage payment (or no mortgage at all): $800 to $2,000 per month
  • Lower property taxes: $150 to $400 per month
  • Lower homeowners insurance: $200 to $500 per month
  • Lower maintenance costs: $200 to $400 per month

Total Estimated Savings

$1,500 to $3,000+ per month

That's approximately $18,000 to $36,000 per year back in your pocket. Money that can be used for travel, retirement, family experiences, or simply enjoying life.

What You're Not Giving Up

One of the biggest concerns people have is whether Port St. Lucie feels too far from everything.

Here's the reality:

  • About 45 minutes from Palm Beach
  • Roughly 2 hours from Fort Lauderdale and Miami
  • Easy access to the beaches of Jensen Beach and Stuart
  • World class golf courses
  • The St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon
  • Growing restaurant, shopping, healthcare, and cultural options

And perhaps most importantly, Port St. Lucie offers something many people are looking for: more space, less congestion, and a lifestyle that feels more relaxed.

My husband and I lived in Victoria Park in Fort Lauderdale for 20 years. We loved it. But eventually we realized we had outgrown it. Port St. Lucie gave us a lifestyle that better matched the chapter of life we're in today.
